The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced that a total of 160 alliances, political parties, and individual candidate lists have submitted their nominations for the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections.
According to IHEC spokesperson Jumana al-Ghalai, these candidate lists will now undergo a comprehensive audit process expected to take one month to complete.
“The total number of alliances, parties, and individual lists that have presented candidates for the forthcoming parliamentary elections stands at 160,” Ms al-Ghalai told Iraq’s state media (INA).
She added that the commission is continuing to verify candidate data and priorities, emphasising the importance of a thorough vetting process to ensure compliance with electoral regulations.
The IHEC began verifying the candidate lists last Friday, immediately following the closure of submissions on Thursday. Initially, the commission had set the deadline for submitting nominations as 24 June 2025, but later extended it to 26 June, with no further extensions permitted.
The parliamentary elections are scheduled for 11 November 2025, a date formally approved by the Federal Council of Ministers in April during a session chaired by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani. IHEC has confirmed its readiness to conduct the elections, which will be held across more than 8,700 polling centres and over 40,000 polling stations nationwide.
