U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday, 24 June 2025, that a ceasefire between Israel and Iran was now in effect, urging both nations not to violate the agreement.
President Trump posted on Truth Social: “THE CEASEFIRE IS NOW IN EFFECT. PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE IT!”.
When he initially announced the ceasefire on Monday to end the 12-day conflict, he indicated that Israel and Iran would be allowed time to complete ongoing missions before the ceasefire would be implemented in a phased manner.
Eyewitnesses reported explosions near Tel Aviv and Beersheba prior to President Trump’s statement. The Israeli military confirmed that Iran had launched six waves of missiles, with four fatalities reported in Beersheba—the first deaths in Israel since the ceasefire announcement. Iran’s semi-official news agency stated that Tehran fired its final missile salvo just before the ceasefire took effect.
Reuters reported that a senior White House official revealed that President Trump brokered the ceasefire during a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with Israel agreeing provided Iran refrained from further attacks.
According to Reuters, Iranian officials confirmed Tehran’s agreement to the ceasefire but insisted hostilities would only cease if Israel halted its attacks. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Iran would stop its military response if Israel ended what he termed “illegal aggression” by 4 a.m. Tehran time on Tuesday, though a final decision on cessation would be made later.
The ceasefire followed a period of intense conflict, including US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. The Trump administration maintains its objective was to dismantle Iran’s nuclear programme, not to escalate the war. Vice President JD Vance asserted that Iran was close to acquiring a nuclear weapon but is now incapable of doing so due to US actions.
The ceasefire announcement was mediated by Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who secured Tehran’s agreement after discussions with Iranian officials. U.S. officials, including Vice President Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff, were involved in communications with Iran.
Markets responded positively to the ceasefire news, with U.S. stock futures rising and crude oil prices falling to their lowest in over a week amid reduced concerns over supply disruptions in the region.
In summary, the ceasefire marks a tentative step towards ending the 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran, though some uncertainty remains over the durability of the agreement and the complete cessation of hostilities.
