Iraq has reaffirmed its firm rejection of the use of force in international relations, emphasising the importance of respecting state sovereignty and refraining from targeting vital national facilities.

Iraqi Federal Government spokesperson Basem al-Awadi stated: “The Iraqi government expresses its deep concern and condemnation regarding the targeting of nuclear facilities within the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This military escalation poses a serious threat to security and peace in the Middle East and exposes regional stability to grave risks.”

He added: “Iraq reiterates its principled rejection of the use of force in international affairs and calls for respect for the sovereignty of states, particularly urging restraint from targeting critical infrastructure, especially those under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency and designated for peaceful purposes.”

Awadi further explained: “Iraq stresses that military solutions cannot replace dialogue and diplomacy. The continuation of such attacks risks a dangerous escalation with consequences extending beyond the borders of any single state, thereby undermining the stability of the region and the wider world.”

He continued: “Iraq reminds the international community that wars leave nothing but destruction in their wake. The responsibility of major powers and international organisations must be to prevent further crises, not to ignite them. In line with its commitment to regional and international peace and stability, Iraq calls for immediate de-escalation, the opening of urgent diplomatic channels to contain the situation, and concerted efforts to defuse the crisis, ensuring collective security in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter.”

Awadi's statement comes amid escalations in the Middle East situation as the U.S. President Donald Trump announced late on Saturday that United States forces had struck Iran’s three principal nuclear sites, warning Tehran that it would face further devastating attacks if it did not agree to peace.

"The strikes were a spectacular military success," President Trump said in a televised address. "Iran's key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated."

The U.S. President said U.S. forces struck Iran's three principal nuclear sites: Natanz, Isfahan and Fordow. He told Fox News' Sean Hannity show that six bunker-buster bombs were dropped on Fordow, while 30 Tomahawk missiles were fired against other nuclear sites.

The strikes occurred amid more than a week of aerial combat between Israel and Iran, resulting in casualties on both sides. Israel launched these attacks on Iran with the stated aim of eliminating any possibility of Tehran developing nuclear weapons. Conversely, Iran maintains that its nuclear programme is solely for peaceful purposes.
