The British government has called for restraint and renewed diplomatic efforts following rising tensions between the United States and Iran. The appeal comes after US President Donald Trump referred to Iran’s Supreme Leader as “an easy target” and warned that American patience is “wearing thin”.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, speaking at the G7 summit, said that while the President’s language was strong, there was no indication that the United States was preparing for direct military involvement. He reaffirmed the UK’s concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions and stressed Israel’s right to defend itself, but urged all parties to “step back and return to dialogue”.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy also addressed the matter, describing the current situation as “deeply concerning” and calling for careful diplomacy to avoid further escalation.

As a precaution, the UK has deployed RAF Typhoon fighter jets and air-to-air refuelling aircraft to the Middle East.

Although evacuation flights have not been organised, British support teams have been positioned in Jordan and Egypt in case the security situation worsens.
