Iraqi and French Presidents Meet in Nice to Boost Bilateral Relations

The President of the Republic of Iraq, Dr Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, met on Tuesday, 10 June 2025, with the President of the French Republic, Mr Emmanuel Macron, in the French city of Nice.
At the outset of the meeting – which was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein – President Rashid extended his gratitude to President Macron for the invitation to participate in the Third United Nations Ocean Conference. He expressed his hope for the success of France and Costa Rica in co-hosting the event.
President Rashid reiterated his commitment to further strengthening the distinguished bilateral relations between Iraq and France, aiming to elevate them to more advanced levels. He also underscored the importance of enhanced cooperation to serve the mutual interests of the two friendly nations. In addition, he emphasised the significance of joint efforts and coordination to promote peace and stability across the region.
The two Presidents exchanged perspectives on the agenda of the United Nations Ocean Conference, including its forthcoming recommendations on the protection of oceans and marine resources from pollution, and the need to implement international commitments to address climate and environmental challenges.
The meeting also included a review of the situation in the Middle East, with both sides stressing the necessity for greater international efforts to reduce tensions and foster opportunities for peace.
For his part, President Macron affirmed the depth of the relations between France and Iraq and reiterated his country’s steadfast commitment to reinforcing these ties and broadening avenues for mutual cooperation. He highlighted France’s support for Iraq in its pursuit of security, stability, and sovereignty. President Macron also commended President Rashid’s efforts in fostering friendly relations and acknowledged Iraq’s vital regional and international role in advancing peace and security.
