Iraqi President Joins World Leaders at UN Ocean Conference in Nice

Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein, participated in the opening ceremony of the Third United Nations Ocean Conference, held in Nice, France.
The event brought together United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, French President Emmanuel Macron, and numerous world leaders and heads of state.
According to a statement by the Iraqi Presidency, upon his arrival at the conference venue, President Rashid was warmly received by President Macron, who expressed his appreciation for Iraq’s presence at the high-level gathering. President Macron also extended a formal invitation to President Rashid to attend a banquet in honour of the participating delegations.
The statement said that President Rashid conveyed his gratitude to the French President and offered his best wishes for the success of the conference in advancing its global developmental and environmental goals.
It added that the President's participation reflects Iraq’s growing commitment to international efforts aimed at achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those concerning the protection of marine ecosystems, the fight against water pollution, and the global response to climate change and environmental degradation.
The opening session of the 3rd UNOC featured expert presentations and policy recommendations on a range of priority issues, including the blue economy and sustainable finance, scientific research, marine biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience strategies. Delegates also toured various exhibition pavilions showcasing international initiatives and innovations in ocean governance.
