The Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria have repelled an attack by cells of the terrorist organisation Islamic State (ISIS) in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, east of Syria, according to an official statement released on Sunday, 8 June 2025.

In the early hours of Sunday, the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) reported that an armed group launched an assault on a security checkpoint in the village of al-Sabha on Saturday night, using hand grenades. As the attackers retreated, they also opened fire on a nearby outpost at a local water station.

The Asayish report added that reinforcement patrol dispatched from the town of Al Busayrah was also targeted with gunfire. Security personnel responded promptly and successfully repelled the attackers. No casualties or injuries were reported among the Internal Security Forces.

The Internal Security Forces, also known as Asayish, operate under the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES). They function as a civil protection agency and are actively engaged in counter-terrorism efforts, particularly against ISIS.

This latest incident comes just one week after three Asayish members were killed in a separate ISIS attack near Raqqa, highlighting the ongoing security challenges faced by the region.

ISIS and its self-proclaimed “caliphate” were territorially defeated in Syria in 2019, two years after the group was driven out of Iraq. However, following the fall of the Assad regime, the group has sought to regroup and reassert its presence, particularly in the volatile security environment of eastern Syria.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), backed by the United States, serve as the de facto military force of the autonomous northeast (Rojava). The SDF continues to combat ISIS and prevent the organisation from regaining a foothold in the region.

In late May, three Asayish personnel were killed when their patrol vehicle struck a landmine planted by ISIS on the Raqqa–Hasaka road. This attack occurred just days after the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) conducted an operation in Al Busayrah, resulting in the arrest of ten ISIS operatives.

These incidents underscore the ongoing threat posed by ISIS and the continued efforts of local security forces to ensure stability in the region.
