Geert Wilders of the Party for Freedom
Dutch politics have been chaotic after Geert Wilders, leader of the far-right Party for Freedom (PVV), announced his party's withdrawal from the country’s four-party coalition government. The move comes after a breakdown in talks over immigration policy, a central issue for Wilders.
At the centre of the dispute was a hardline 10-point proposal from Wilders, calling for sweeping restrictions on asylum. Among the measures were suspending asylum claims from neighbouring safe countries, ending family reunifications, and using military surveillance at national borders. These proposals were firmly rejected by the coalition’s other parties—the centre-right VVD, the centrist NSC, and the agrarian BBB—who raised concerns about the legality and workability of the plans.
Wilders, a long-time critic of immigration policy, said his party could no longer remain in government without firm action on asylum.
“We pledged real change to the Dutch people, particularly on asylum. If our coalition partners won’t deliver that, we must walk away,” Wilders said at a press briefing.
The PVV’s departure means the coalition no longer holds a majority in parliament. Prime Minister Dick Schoof is expected to tender the government’s resignation, triggering a caretaker administration while new elections are prepared. Opposition leader Frans Timmermans has already called for snap elections and tougher border measures.
Wilders’ party currently leads national polling with 31% support, and his uncompromising stance on immigration appears to resonate strongly with his base. However, political rivals such as Timmermans and the VVD remain competitive ahead of a likely election campaign.
The collapse of the coalition highlights the challenges of maintaining unity in a government spanning the political spectrum, and confirms immigration as a defining and divisive issue in Dutch politics.
