Iraq’s Minister of Justice Dr. Khalid Shwani arrived in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Monday, 2 June 2025, for an official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in judicial and legal affairs.
According to a statement from the Iraqi Ministry of Justice, received by PUKMEDIA, the visit commenced with a high-level meeting between Minister Shwani and his Iranian counterpart, Amin Hossein Rahimi, along with their respective delegations, with discussions focusing on enhancing judicial ties between the two nations and activating previously signed bilateral agreements in this domain.
The statement further noted that the two sides agreed to form a joint technical committee to oversee the implementation of these agreements, particularly those pertaining to reform institutions and the judicial and legal sectors. The aim is to facilitate the exchange of expertise and contribute to the development of legal systems in both countries.
Additionally, the two ministers explored the possibility of signing a new memorandum of understanding focused on the extradition of individuals wanted in corruption cases, as well as the recovery of public funds belonging to both states. This initiative reflects a shared commitment to upholding the rule of law and deepening cooperation in combating transnational crime.
This visit aligns with the Iraqi government’s broader strategy to expand international judicial cooperation, activate relevant bilateral frameworks, and promote the mutual exchange of legal knowledge and expertise.
