IHEC Sets Deadline for Receiving Back Candidate Lists

Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced on Saturday, 24 May 2025, the deadline for receiving back the lists of candidates wishing to contest in the 2025 Iraqi parliamentary elections.
IHEC Spokesperson Jumana al-Ghalai told PUKMEDIA that lists of both open-list and individual candidates may be submitted from 25 May 2025 until the close of business on 24 June 2025.
Registration for alliances, political parties and individual lists concluded on 22 May 2025, with the Department of Political Parties and Organisations confirming the final tally as follows:
•Authorised political parties: 343
•Parties currently in formation: 60
•Parties formally expressing intent to participate: 118
•Existing political alliances: 66
•Alliances granted official approval by the Board of Commissioners: 5
•Alliances pending approval: 11
•Alliances expressing interest in participating: 25
•Independent electoral lists submitted: 16
The IHEC launched its voter card and biometric data renewal campaign on 24 March 2025, with the process set to continue until 15 June 2025.
The previous parliamentary elections, held on 10 October 2021, returned 329 members to Iraq’s fifth parliamentary session, with a voter turnout of 42.15 percent. That legislature convened for its inaugural session on 9 January 2022.
