The Arab Media Conference on Climate Change continued for a third consecutive day in Baghdad, with participation from several media outlets in the Kurdistan Region. The event has brought together 175 journalists from around the world to focus on the critical role of the media in addressing climate change.

Dilband Mustafa, Director General of the GK TV Channel, emphasised the importance of collaborative media action.

“We have proposed that all media outlets unite in launching a major awareness campaign to combat climate change and drought. This would include broadcasting several environmental awareness segments each day,” Mustafa said.

He added that the conference has underlined the media’s role in raising awareness across both society and government, particularly around water conservation.

“There is a serious threat of water shortages in Iraq. The conference highlighted the need to monitor water usage carefully and promote consumption based on measurable limits,” he stated.

As part of the proposed initiatives, Mustafa noted that by the end of the conference, a joint media project would be drafted. The Iraqi Media Network, in coordination with the Iraqi Ministry of Culture and other relevant institutions, is expected to mandate that media outlets broadcast daily environmental awareness content.

Karwan Anwar, Secretary of the Sulaymaniyah branch of the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate, previously spoke to PUKMEDIA regarding the significance of the gathering.

“This congress focuses on the media’s responsibilities and obligations in addressing climate change. It reflects Iraq’s growing stability and aims to tackle urgent environmental challenges, such as water scarcity and desertification,” Anwar said.

He continued: “Our goal is to mobilise media efforts to protect the environment and mitigate the consequences of climate change, both in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The media has a responsibility to highlight these risks and foster public engagement.”

Anwar concluded by stressing the broader implications of the crisis, adding: “We discussed the serious consequences of climate change, which underlie many of the region’s economic, political, and social challenges. It is vital that we take the congress’s recommendations seriously. Kurdish media must now take a leading role in raising awareness and informing the public about these threats.”
