Arab Media Congress in Baghdad.
With participation from media organisations in the Kurdistan Region, Baghdad has hosted the fourth Arab Media Congress, held under the theme “The Role of the Media in Confronting Climate Change.” The event was jointly organised by the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) and the Iraqi Media Network.
Karwan Anwar, Secretary of the Sulaymaniyah branch of the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate, told PUKMEDIA: “The Congress focuses on the responsibilities and obligations of the media in addressing climate change, with around 170 participants from across the globe.”
He added: “Hosting this event in Baghdad reflects the growing security and stability in the country. It also addresses the climate challenges facing Iraq, including water scarcity, desertification, and other environmental concerns.”
Anwar explained: “Through this congress, we aim to harness media efforts in support of environmental protection and in mitigating the risks and impacts of climate change in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The media must draw attention to the dangers of climate change and raise public awareness to encourage action.”
He concluded: “We collectively discussed the serious implications of climate change, which underpin many economic, political, and social challenges. It is therefore essential that we respond to the congress's recommendations in a responsible manner. Kurdish media is being encouraged to take climate change seriously and to inform the public about its threats.”
