Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Qubad Talabani, reaffirmed the importance of reopening Turkish airspace to flights from Sulaymaniyah during his meeting with former Turkish Prime Minister and leader of the Future Party (GP), Ahmet Davutoğlu.
The meeting took place on Monday, 19 May 2025, during which the two sides discussed the peace process in Türkiye and ways to strengthen relations between the Kurdistan Region and Türkiye.
Davutoğlu reflected on his two-decade-long friendship with the late President Mam Jalal, recalling his deep commitment to peace and his tireless efforts to resolve conflicts in Kurdistan, Iraq, and the wider region — particularly in relation to the peace process in Türkiye.
Regarding Türkiye's peace process, both sides agreed that there are no losers in peace and stressed the importance of all parties taking the necessary steps to ensure its success. Deputy PM Talabani stated that a successful peace process would not only serve the Kurdish and Turkish peoples within Türkiye but would also be in the broader interest of the entire region. He emphasised the need for all sides to contribute to the process through cooperation and mutual support.
The meeting also addressed the need for enhanced cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and Türkiye. Deputy PM Talabani reiterated the Region’s desire to deepen relations with Türkiye across all areas and stressed that it is in the best interests of both sides to reopen Turkish airspace to flights from Sulaymaniyah International Airport as soon as possible.
I had a constructive exchange with Ahmet Davutoğlu on the peace process and the future of Kurdistan–Türkiye relations," Deputy PM Talabani wrote on X following the meeting.
"We affirmed that enduring peace is in the shared interest of both peoples and the wider region," he added.
Regarding the reopening of Turkish airspace to flights from Sulaymaniyah International Airport, Deputy PM Talabani said: "I reiterated the importance of reopening Turkish airspace to flights from Slemani (Sulaymaniyah)."
