Darbaz Kosrat Rasul, member of the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), reaffirmed that while the PUK and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) hold differing views, there is currently a shared vision between both parties regarding the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet. He also underscored the importance of fostering strong national unity within the Kurdistan Region.
Speaking at a press conference, Rasul highlighted the formation of the new KRG Cabinet and stated: "The meetings between the PUK and the KDP are ongoing. We, as the PUK, reiterate our commitment to establishing a strong and unified government in which all parties genuinely consider themselves equal partners."
He clarified: "There is no conflict between the PUK and the KDP, only differing perspectives concerning the government formation. However, both sides have now reached consensus on a shared vision for forming the government, as well as a roadmap for governance."
Addressing the distribution of government positions, Rasul commented: "Since 2013, there has been no 50-50 government. The sixth, seventh and eighth cabinets were broad-based cabinets, but that issue has become a thing of the past. Obtaining the positions will be based on electoral merit, the needs and history of the forces, but each position has its own value, this should be taken into account."
On the matter of Kurdish participation in the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections, particularly in Kirkuk and the disputed areas, Rasul added: "The parliamentary elections are held under a very technical law. Arabs and Turkmens participate on several lists. Often, if Kurds run on a single list, it could be more detrimental. What matters most is agreeing on a post-election strategy and how we can defend the rights of our people."
