PM al-Sudani Visits Ankara to Bolster Iraq-Türkiye Ties

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani travelled to the Turkish capital, Ankara, on Thursday for an official visit.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Media Office, “PM Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani has departed for Ankara on an official visit to attend the meetings of the Iraqi-Turkish Supreme Council for Strategic Cooperation.”

Last year in Baghdad, PM al-Sudani and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan signed the Strategic Framework Agreement between Iraq and Türkiye, which serves as a roadmap for fostering a comprehensive economic partnership.

During this most recent visit, both sides also oversaw the signing of a number of memoranda of understanding and agreements across a wide range of sectors, including the following:

1. Strategic Framework Agreement between the Governments of the Republic of Iraq and the Republic of Türkiye.
2. Framework Memorandum for Cooperation in the Field of Water Resources.
3. Memorandum of Understanding concerning the Development Road Project between the respective Ministries of Transport.
4. MoU establishing a Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO).
5. Agreement on the Promotion, Protection, and Exchange of Investments.
6. MoU between the Federation of Iraqi Chambers of Commerce and the Turkish Foreign Economic Relations Board.
7. MoU on Technical, Scientific, and Economic Cooperation in the Sphere of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises.
8. MoU on Military Training Cooperation.
9. MoU on Military Health Training and Collaboration.
10. Strategic Cooperation MoU between the Military Industrialisation Authority and the Turkish Defence Industries Presidency.
11. MoU on Security Cooperation.
12. MoUs between the Foreign Service Institute and the Turkish Institute for Strategic Studies, and between both nations’ Ministries of Foreign Affairs.
13. MoU on Cooperation in Youth and Sports.
14. MoU on Health and Medical Sciences Cooperation.
15. Agricultural Working Group Plan for 2024–2025.
16. MoU on Scientific and Technological Research.
17. MoU on Educational Cooperation.
18. MoU on Tourism Development.
19. MoU on Employment and Social Security.
20. MoU on Social Affairs and Family Welfare.
21. MoU on Government Documentation and Archiving.
22. MoU on Product Safety and the Elimination of Technical Barriers to Trade.
23. MoU on Religious Affairs between Iraq’s Sunni Endowment Diwan and Turkey’s Presidency of Religious Affairs.
24. MoU on Judicial Training for Students, Judges, Legal Assistants, and Prosecutors.
25. MoU on Energy Cooperation, specifically in Electricity.
26. MoU on Media and Communications.
