Ongoing negotiations between the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) continue as part of efforts to form the new cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). The PUK's spokesperson confirmed on Saturday, 3 May 2025, that a new round of discussions will take place in the coming days to address the allocation of governmental posts.
Speaking at a press conference, PUK spokesperson Saadi Ahmed Pire stated: "The PUK and the KDP will convene in the next few days to discuss the distribution of ministerial positions in the upcoming KRG."
He added that talks between the two parties remain ongoing, underscoring the importance of collaboration at this critical juncture. “The region is undergoing rapid changes,” Pire noted. “It is therefore essential to establish a functional government and an effective parliament. The PUK is fully prepared to pursue a unified and joint policy in the interest of our people in the region and across Kurdistan.”
The most recent high-level meeting between PUK and KDP delegations took place on 28 April 2025 at the residence of Mam Jalal in Dukan, Sulaymaniyah.
Following the Kurdistan parliamentary elections held in October last year, the Region is now in anticipation of the new cabinet's formation. As several parties have already declared their intention to assume opposition roles in parliament, it is widely expected that the PUK and KDP—both having secured electoral victories—will reach an agreement to form the next government.
