PUK President, Kurdistan PM meet at Dukan, Sulaymaniyah.

PUK KDP President Bafel

Senior delegations from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) convened under the supervision of PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani and KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani at Mam Jalal’s residence in Dukan, Sulaymaniyah. The meeting focused on advancing negotiations regarding the formation of the next Kurdistan Regional Government cabinet and addressing key political and administrative issues.

Following the conclusion of the meeting between the PUK President and the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the senior negotiating delegations of both parties have continued their discussions on the formation of the next KRG cabinet. The ongoing talks reflect efforts to resolve remaining differences and establish a new government for the Kurdistan Region

Today's meeting between the PUK President and KRG PM follows a previous engagement between President Talabani and Prime Minister Barzani on 16 March 2025 in Pirmam, Erbil. After that meeting, President Talabani stated: “The meeting was very good, and we agreed on a number of strategic issues that are in the interest of our people. I believe that the discussions will continue. Our goal is to form a government as quickly as possible to serve our people.”

Prime Minister Barzani also commented: “During this period, we held two positive meetings to bring our views closer together and discuss issues of concern to the people of Kurdistan and our region in general. There is good progress and understanding on many of these issues.”

Meanwhile, the most recent round of negotiations between the senior delegations of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) took place on 15 April 2025 at the KDP’s Political Bureau headquarters in Pirmam. A statement released after that meeting noted that “the steps to form the new government were discussed, and there were positive steps and good developments.”

The meeting in Dukan is part of ongoing efforts between the PUK and KDP to advance the formation of a new government in the Kurdistan Region.

Kurdistan parliamentary elections were held in October of last year, and the Kurdistan Region is currently awaiting the formation of its new cabinet.

It is anticipated that the two victorious parties, the PUK and the KDP, will come to an agreement to form the next government because a number of parties have already stated that they will function as opposition parties in the parliament.
