The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) issued a statement marking the anniversary of the bombing of Qaladiza with internationally banned weapons.
The Politburo's message reads as follows:
On the anniversary of the bombing of Qaladiza, which occurred on the morning of 24 April 1974 at the hands of the former Ba'athist regime, we solemnly honour the souls of all the martyrs who lost their lives in that tragic event, the majority of whom were students and professors at Sulaymaniyah University.
In response to this atrocity, and to the Ba'athist regime's policy of forcibly displacing villages and rural areas in the Region, the people of Qaladiza organised a mass demonstration on 24 April 1982, marking the eighth anniversary of the bombing. The demonstration, overseen by PUK organisations, saw the people of Qaladiza take control of several enemy headquarters. This demonstration marked a significant moment in the Region's struggle and inspired similar protests in other Kurdish cities over the years.
Today, on this anniversary, as we commemorate the names of the martyrs from the bombing and those who fell during the 1982 demonstration, we acknowledge the steadfast role of the people of Qaladiza. It is our collective responsibility to continue the path of reconstruction and ensure the best possible services for the people of Qaladiza.
Glory and immortality to the martyrs of the Qaladiza bombing and all the martyrs of our struggle.
Salutations to the people of Qaladiza, who have always stood at the forefront of our fight.
