Leaders recalled Kurdish Journalism Day, urging for guaranteeing press freedom, protecting the rights of journalists, and ensuring an open environment for freedom of expression.

On 22 April 1898, the first issue of Kurdistan, the inaugural Kurdish-language newspaper, was published in Cairo, Egypt, by Miqdad Madhat Bedirkhan. This milestone marked the beginning of Kurdish journalism and is commemorated annually as Kurdish Journalism Day throughout Kurdistan.

PUK President Reaffirms Commitment to Advancing Press Freedom

Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), has extended congratulations to journalists on the occasion of Kurdish Journalism Day, reaffirming his commitment to advancing press freedom and supporting the vital role of the media in Kurdish society.

In a statement marking the 127th anniversary of the publication of the first Kurdish newspaper, President Talabani said:

“On the 127th anniversary of the publication of the first Kurdish newspaper, 'Kurdistan,' I extend my sincere congratulations to all journalists who have diligently fulfilled their professional responsibilities and contributed to the advancement of Kurdish journalism and the service of our people as solid, valiant, and brave pens.

As always, I remain committed to supporting and expanding the space for freedom of writing, criticism, and expression—fundamental pillars for the development of our Region and society.

On this day, I assure journalists that I will do my utmost to prevent restrictions on journalistic work and violations of journalists’ rights. I reiterate that all cases involving journalists must be handled in accordance with the Journalism Law.

I call on journalists to prioritise the protection of social peace and to serve as defenders of the public interest. It is imperative that journalists approach their work with professionalism and responsibility, refraining from allowing personal or partisan hatred to influence their reporting, and upholding honesty and courage in their craft.”

PUK Politburo Reaffirms Support to Journalists on Kurdish Journalism Day

The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) congratulated journalists on the occasion of Kurdish Journalism Day, while reaffirming support for journalists who uphold accuracy, integrity, and responsible sourcing in their work, so that the space of freedom is expanded throughout Kurdistan.

It is noteworthy that every year, Kurdish journalists and people across Kurdistan celebrate Kurdish Journalism Day on 22 April to commemorate the publication of the first Kurdish newspaper, ‘Kurdistan’.

The PUK Politburo's message for Kurdish Journalism Day read:

On the occasion of the 127th anniversary of Kurdish journalism, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Kurdish journalists and the Kurdish media institutions for their contributions to the development of this vital field.

Despite enduring many challenging years under oppressive regimes, Kurdish journalism began to experience a notable expansion of freedoms following the 1991 uprising—a progress that, fortunately, continues to this day.

Since the time of the mountain struggle, the PUK has placed significant focus on safeguarding freedom of the press and supporting intellectuals, upholding the principle of “bread and freedom” as a core value. Following the 1991 uprising, and in line with the vision of President Mam Jalal, the PUK continued its efforts to promote press freedom, facilitating the establishment of the first private and independent newspapers and media institutions within areas under its influence.

On this occasion, we reaffirm our support for journalists who uphold accuracy, integrity, and responsible sourcing in their work. We emphasise that the space for free expression, political openness, and independent journalism across Kurdistan must remain protected and never be restricted by undue pressures or unjust actions.

Our nation deserves greater freedom, and it is freedom and democracy that form the pillars of our pride and the foundation of our standing in the international community.

Once again, Congratulations...

Iraqi First Lady Pays Tribute to the Legacy of Kurdish Journalism

Iraqi First Lady, Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed, extended her congratulations to journalists in celebration of Kurdish Journalism Day, acknowledging the efforts of a new generation of Kurdish journalists who continue to uphold the proud legacy established over a century ago.

Below is the statement from the First Lady:

On Kurdish Journalism Day, I am reminded of the power of words to shape identity, awaken a nation, and carry forward the hopes of generations.

On this day in 1898, the first issue of the Kurdish newspaper Kurdistan was published in Cairo, and it swiftly became the voice of a people yearning to be heard. That bold act marked the birth of Kurdish journalism and gave form to our collective aspirations for freedom, unity, and recognition.

As we commemorate this occasion, we also remember the steadfast Kurdish journalists who, over the decades, have given their lives in the pursuit of truth. Their courage and belief in justice continue to illuminate the path for those who follow.

Today, a new generation of Kurdish journalists—working across digital platforms, social media, and emerging media spaces—carry that legacy forward. They are the heirs of those pioneering voices from over a century ago, committed to informing and empowering our people in an ever-evolving media landscape.

Wishing a very happy Kurdish Journalism Day to all who speak, write, and resist with the power of the pen.

Correspondingly, media organisations and journalists must uphold journalistic ethics and strive towards greater professionalism."
