Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid pledged support for free and fair elections, the Iraqi Presidency reported on Monday 21 April 2025.
According to a statement by the Iraqi Presidency, the Iraqi President received a delegation from the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) at Baghdad Palace on Monday 21 April 2025. The delegation was led by Chairman Judge Omar Ahmed Mohammed.
The statement noted that Chairman Mohammed opened the meeting by expressing his appreciation for the President’s ongoing support, particularly as the Commission accelerates its preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The Presidency added that President Rashid reaffirmed that broad public participation in the electoral process is fundamental to a healthy democracy. He underscored that credible, inclusive elections are essential to restoring trust in democratic institutions and ensuring governance that truly reflects the will of the people.
Highlighting the importance of transparency, fairness and electoral justice, the President called for a process that meets the expectations of Iraqi citizens in choosing their representatives, according to the statement. He also emphasised the need for a robust media and outreach strategy to raise public awareness, encourage voter turnout and reinforce the nation’s democratic trajectory.
Meanwhile, Chairman Mohammed and the Commissioners provided a comprehensive update on IHEC’s technical and logistical preparations, affirming the Commission’s full readiness to carry out this vital national responsibility.
On 9 April 2025, the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Media Office announced that the Council of Ministers, chaired by PM Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, held a session, during which it was agreed that the Iraqi parliamentary elections would take place on 11 November 2025.
