The Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has announced that preparations are ongoing for the elections for the sixth term of the Iraqi parliament, which are scheduled to take place on 11 November. The Commission reported that, as of yesterday, 672,180 voters had updated their details, and confirmed that no decision had yet been taken regarding an extension to the voter registration update period.
Jumana al-Ghalai, IHEC Spokesperson, told PUKMEDIA: "Concerning the voter registration update process—which commenced on 25 March and is set to run for one month in accordance with a resolution by the Board of Commissioners—the number of individuals who have visited the Commission’s centres to revise their information had reached 672,180 as of Sunday, 19 April 2025."
She added: "To date, there has been no decision to prolong the voter registration update period. This is a matter that falls under the purview of the head of the electoral administration and the Board of Commissioners."
In relation to the registration process for political parties and alliances, which began on 15 April, Ghalai explained: "This process will remain open until 4 May. A number of parties have approached the Department of Political Parties and Organisations at the IHEC to inquire about the requirements for participating in the forthcoming elections."
She stressed that the Commission continues its efforts in preparation for the upcoming legislative elections. The chairperson, board members, head of the electoral administration, as well as the two general directors and relevant departments, are currently reviewing the operational timetable in line with the approved procedures.
Meanwhile, a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Media Office on 9 April 2025 confirmed that "the Council of Ministers, chaired by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, convened and voted during the session to set 11 November 2025 as the date for the parliamentary elections."
The previous parliamentary elections for the fifth session of the Iraqi parliament took place on 10 October 2021, resulting in the election of 329 members. Voter turnout was recorded at 42.15%, and the elected parliament held its inaugural session on 9 January 2022.
