The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has revealed the number of political parties and alliances registered with its Department of Political Parties and Alliances Affairs.
In a statement given exclusively to PUKMEDIA, Jumana al-Ghalai, the IHEC’s spokesperson, stated that over 300 political parties and entities are currently registered with the Commission, alongside more than 60 alliances.
She urged all political parties, alliances, and organisations to visit the Department of Political Parties Affairs and formally express their intention to participate in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
Al-Ghalai clarified that registration with the IHEC does not guarantee participation in the elections. Therefore, it is essential for all registered political parties and alliances to visit the Commission and confirm their desire to take part.
She noted that not all alliances may be eligible to contest the elections, as some have experienced the withdrawal of member parties, while others have welcomed new entrants. Consequently, all alliances are required to update their registration details with the IHEC to ensure eligibility for participation.
Deadline for RegistrationAl-Ghalai added: “The registration period for political alliances wishing to stand in the 2025 Iraqi parliamentary elections began on the 15th of this month and will remain open until the 4th of May.”
IHEC Prepared for ElectionsShe further confirmed: “The Commission is fully prepared to conduct the legislative elections as scheduled.”
“We are currently awaiting the development of the operational timetable for the elections and the subsequent approval of the Board of Commissioners to proceed with the necessary steps in accordance with the designated timelines,” she said.
On 9 April 2025, the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Media Office announced that the Council of Ministers, chaired by PM Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, had held a session during which it was agreed that the Iraqi parliamentary elections would take place on 11 November 2025.
