The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) issued a statement on the anniversary of the Anfal genocide, stressing the need for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government of Iraq to fulfil their responsibilities regarding this issue.
The statement reads as follows:
Thirty-seven years ago, Kurdistan was subjected to one of history's most heinous crimes: the Anfal genocide, which sought to exterminate our people on their ancestral land.
This horrific crime, committed against defenceless citizens in Kurdish villages, will remain an unhealed wound in our hearts and consciences, and will never be forgotten. Within a few months, 182,000 Kurdish men, women, and children were ruthlessly buried alive, and thousands more were forced to live in misery in forced camps.
On this tragic anniversary, we once again declare that it is our shared duty in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq to step up efforts to provide services to the areas most impacted by the Anfal genocide and to give the families of the martyrs and missing people a dignified life.
On the other hand, Parliament and the federal government must better fulfil their humanitarian and constitutional tasks in order to heal the wounds of the Anfal genocide victims.
Salute to the Anfal martyrs, and a tribute of loyalty and steadfastness to their beloved families.
