Peshmerga forces, in cooperation with Kurdistan Commando Forces and the Operations Directorate of the Garmian Asayish, and with support from the International Coalition, carried out a large-scale operation in the Gara and Palkana areas between the districts of Kifri and Tuz Khurmatu in the Garmian region, destroying a large number of hideouts used by the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists.

Major General Zatyar Hassan, commander of the 4th Infantry Division of the Peshmerga Forces, told PUKMEDIA: "We searched and cleansed the region of terrorists based on intelligence information regarding the movements of ISIS terrorist remnants in the Gara and Palkana areas."

The commander of the 4th Division added: "ISIS terrorists had set up temporary hideouts and bases in those regions, which we were able to fully destroy."

He noted that "the international coalition forces played a major role in the operation, which concluded successfully, and the participating forces returned to their positions safely without any human casualties."

The Islamic State (ISIS) seized large swathes of Iraqi land in 2014, declaring a "caliphate" and killing thousands of people there before Baghdad declared victory in 2017. However, remnants of the terrorists are still active in the country, especially in the regions disputed between Erbil and Baghdad.

The terrorists ambush, kidnap, and extort both civilians and members of the security forces in the disputed areas, which stretch across several provinces, including Kirkuk, Nineveh, Diyala, and Saladin.

Security forces conduct frequent operations aimed at eliminating the remnants of the terrorists.
