Kurdistan Iraq Climate Change

The Kurdistan Region's Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources announced on Tuesday, 8 April 2025, that they are working to build four strategic dams in the Kurdistan Region, as climate change has already begun its effects on both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

Begard Talabani, Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources of the Kurdistan Region, participated in the the First International Conference on Climate Change Action: Challenges and Solutions (ICCCSUE 2025) in Erbil, which aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders to address the urgent challenges posed by climate change.

"The Kurdistan Region and Iraq are vulnerable to climate change, thus the Ministry of Agriculture collaborated with the federal government (Iraqi government) to address this global phenomenon," Minister Talabani said during a speech at the event.

"I don't see the same level of concern that exists in the Kurdistan Region, in Iraq, and negligence will lead to desertification, which will harm its population and food security, causing the Iraqi zone to deteriorate, which will also affect the Kurdistan Region," she warned.

"We have two strategic dams in the Kurdistan Region, Dukan and Darbandikhan, which account for 30 percent of Iraq's water supply," she said.

To address the challenge, Minister Talabani revealed: "Despite the financial crisis, we have taken initiatives that are within our ability. We have built dams. We intend to build four strategic dams on the Great Zab, Little Zab, and Khazir rivers."
