Today is the 34th anniversary of the UN Security Council's adoption of Resolution 688, which was put in place to shield Kurdistan's citizens from the attacks of the deposed Ba'ath government.

Aircraft enforcing the no-fly zones were based at the Turkish Incirlik base, and the UN Security Council enforced an air embargo on Iraq at the 36th parallel north. The embargo lasted until the fall of the Ba'ath regime.

Following the uprising against the overthrown Ba'ath regime, France asked that the UN Security Council condemn the abuse of the Kurds by Iraq in draft Resolution 688.

In addition to urging international relief organisations to meet the needs of the millions of Kurdish refugees who fled to Iran and Türkiye, the resolution asked Iraq to cease its oppression of the Kurds and to respect human rights.

The resolution also demanded allowing humanitarian agencies to deliver the necessary aid to the displaced citizens.
