China The US economy

On 4 April 2025, China announced the imposition of a 34% tariff on all goods imported from the United States, set to take effect from 10 April 2025. The move marks a significant escalation in the ongoing trade row between the two global economic powers.

The decision comes in direct response to US President Donald Trump’s recent introduction of a 34% tariff on Chinese products. In addition to the retaliatory tariffs, Beijing has implemented export controls on vital rare earth elements and suspended imports from several American firms.

Chinese officials stated that the measures are intended to “safeguard national economic interests” and counter what they described as “unfair and unilateral” actions taken by Washington.

The growing trade tensions have sparked concerns over potential disruptions to global supply chains and increased economic uncertainty. Economists warn that a prolonged standoff between the world’s two largest economies could have far-reaching consequences for international markets and inflation levels.

As of now, neither side has shown a willingness to return to negotiations.
