Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, has stressed that the Fayli Kurds are among the oldest communities in both Kurdistan and Iraq, and that they deserve compensation for the genocide and forced displacement they endured, along with the restoration of their long-denied rights.
In a statement issued to mark the anniversary of the genocide against the Fayli Kurds, Deputy PM Talabani remarked: “The Fayli Kurds, like the Yazidis, are one of the most ancient groups in Kurdistan and Iraq, yet they have faced some of the gravest injustices and oppression over the past century.”
He explained that the Fayli Kurds have been repeatedly targeted—at times due to their religious affiliation and at others simply for being Kurdish. “They were treated as outsiders and stripped of their rights,” he noted.
Deputy PM Talabani emphasised that the Kurdish people will never forget the atrocities committed against the Fayli Kurds, including their forced expulsion by the former Ba’ath regime. However, he also highlighted that this tragedy should serve as a catalyst for strengthening unity and fostering a shared future among Kurdistan’s diverse communities.
He concluded by urging Kurdish representatives in Baghdad to continue working diligently to ensure that the Fayli Kurds receive compensation and that their confiscated rights are fully restored.
