Seven Kurdish youngsters who were captured by Libyan militias en route to Europe were repatriated to the Kurdistan Region thanks to the efforts of Badriya Hussein, a member of the Iraqi Parliament from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc.
MP Hussein told PUKMEDIA: "I went to Chwarqurna, to see the families whose sons were recently taken captives by Libyan militias and their lives were in danger."
She added: "When the families came to see me, I promised them that I would do everything in my power to ensure their sons returned safely. Prior to their safe return to their families yesterday, I had continuous communication with the Iraqi ambassador in Libya."
The returned youngsters thanked the PUK MP and one of them said: "We are grateful to PUK MP Badriya Hussein for saving us from that misery. We spent around a month and a half in detention in Libya. Our lives were in danger."
Every year, thousands of young people from the Kurdistan Region migrate abroad via illegal roads; some fall prey to the illegal roads, while others spend years behind bars and face an uncertain fate.
