Speaking about the expected meeting between the Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), and Kurdistan Region PM Masrour Barzani, PUK Spokesperson Saadi Ahmed Pire stressed that the meeting is crucial as 90% of the issues between the two sides have been resolved.

PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani and  PM Barzani are scheduled to meet in Erbil on Sunday, 16 March 2025. According to a statement by the PUK President's media office, the two parties will discuss the political climate in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the region, as well as the political implications, preparing for future developments, the Kurdistan Region's position, and the formation of the new cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

During the commemoration ceremony for the 37th anniversary of the chemical attack on Halabja at the PUK Political Bureau's office in Erbil on Sunday, 16 March 2025, PUK Spokesperson Saadi Ahmed Pire said:  "90% of the problems and differences have been resolved."

He added: "The meeting today is crucial because the PUK and KDP joint committee left the issues that have not been settled to be addressed at the summit meeting between the two parties."

Pire further stated: "For regional security, peace, and stability, all parties must adjust their demands to accommodate one another and work towards establishing an efficient government and parliament. To this end, we must learn from the Halabja catastrophe."

A joint committee was previously established by the PUK and KDP to debate the formation of the government and to determine the points of disagreement between the two parties. Following a number of meetings, the PUK-KDP joint negotiating committee sent a draft proposal to the senior delegations of both parties to debate the points in order to reach a conclusion and form a government.

Kurdistan parliamentary elections were held in October of last year, and the Kurdistan Region is currently awaiting the formation of its new cabinet.

It is anticipated that the two victorious parties, the PUK and the KDP, will come to an agreement to form the next government because a number of parties have already stated that they will function as opposition parties in the parliament.
