An MP of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc in the Iraqi parliament has called on both the Supreme Judicial Council and the National Security Service to investigate the associates of the former Ba'athist regime who were arrested recently, in order to uncover the information they hold about the regime's crimes against the Kurdish people.

In two separate official letters addressed today, Tuesday 11 March 2025, to the President of the Supreme Judicial Council and the President of the National Security Service, and a copy received by PUKMEDIA, MP Karwan Yarwais, the rapporteur of the PUK parliamentary bloc, urged that the relevant courts and departments be instructed "to investigate the criminals and discover the information they possess about the crimes of the defunct regime against the Kurdish people, particularly the Anfal genocide."

On 31st January 2025, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani announced the arrest of a criminal gang of associates from the former regime, who were involved in the martyrdom of Ayat al-Atma, Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr, and thousands of Iraqis across the country, including Kurdish citizens. Al-Sudani stated on the X platform: "The National Security personnel, in conjunction with the state's security efforts, are proving their dedication is on the right path, towards upholding the law and ensuring there is no impunity."

Al-Sudani continued: "With the achievement of justice in the arrest of the symbols of the criminal apparatus of the Ba'athist regime, including the killers of the martyr Ayatollah al-Uzma Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr, may God be pleased with him, and his sister, along with the martyrs of the al-Hakim family, and thousands of Iraqis whose honourable lives were lost in the depths of prisons, we reaffirm our commitment to pursuing these criminals, even if it takes a long time for them to evade justice."

He concluded by saying: "Our sincere efforts will continue with the same momentum, pursuing everyone who has committed crimes against the blood of Iraqis, at all times and in all places. This is our vow to our people, and every oppressed or fallen martyr."

For his part, the Spokesperson for the National Security Service, Arshad al-Hakim, commented on the details of the arrest of the criminal gang of the defunct regime: “We arrested five of the most notorious criminals from the former regime, responsible for the killings of thousands of Iraqis.” He added, “The arrest operation was conducted in line with the provisions of the law banning the dissolved Ba'ath Party, and with high-level coordination with all relevant parties and the judicial authorities.”
