PUK Spokesperson Saadi Ahmed Pire.
Today, 11 March 2025, 34 years have passed over Erbil's uprising and the Spokesperson for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) announced: "The Erbil Uprising was supervised and led by the PUK."
PUK Spokesperson Saadi Ahmed Pire said in a speech he delivered on the anniversary of the uprising in Erbil: "Erbil's uprising demonstrated that March is not just a month of sufferings for the Kurds; rather, it is also one of joy that has given a lot to the Kurdish people."
"We Erbilers believe that we defeated our Hulegu on March 11 and gave a historical lesson to the Ba'ath through the armed cells of Brusk and the Peshmerga forces, which were led by Kosrat Rasul Ali and with the participation of our comrades," he said. "We as Erbilers were proud of the PUK because the Erbil uprising was supervised and led by the PUK."
He further stated: "The uprising was the key to all the closed doors. The Gulf War was taken advantage of. We now have the Kurdistan Regional Government and Parliament because of the uprising."
Regarding the status of the Kurdistan Region, Pire said: "The Kurdistan Region has its own status and is recognised internationally. It has made good progress in the democratic process and elections. Over 70% of citizens participated in the last elections."
Pira said at the end of his speech: "After 34 years, we acknowledge that there are still shortcomings; thus, it is everyone's duty to address them and provide better services to our people."
The Kurdish uprising first began in Ranya town, Sulaymaniyah, on 5 March 1991, and later spread throughout Kurdistan, where the people of Kurdistan rose against the regime of the fallen dictator Saddam Hussein, as the Peshmerga forces and the people of Kurdistan recorded heroic epics that led to the liberation of Kurdistan from the grip of the Baathists.
The PUK was the mastermind and implementer of the uprising, creating the uprising programme and spreading it across all cities in the Kurdistan Region, ultimately securing victory and liberating the city of Kirkuk."
