Iraqi President Emphasises Need for Justice & Compensation for Halabja

Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid emphasised the need for justice and compensation during a meeting with Halabja officials, calling for urgent improvements in infrastructure, public services and economic opportunities for the people of Halabja.
According to a statement by the Iraqi Presidency, Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid welcomed a delegation from Halabja at Baghdad Palace on Sunday, 9 March 2025, where they discussed the city’s reconstruction, economic development and the challenges facing its citizens. The delegation included government officials, parliamentary representatives and religious leaders, all advocating for greater investment and support for the city’s future.
The statement noted that President Rashid reaffirmed Halabja’s enduring legacy of sacrifice and resilience.
“Halabja stands as a symbol of sacrifice and courage,” he stated. “The chemical attack by the former regime remains a heinous crime against humanity.”
He emphasised the need for justice and compensation, calling for urgent improvements in infrastructure, public services and economic opportunities for the people of Halabja.
The President also acknowledged the city’s historical and cultural significance, recognising its role in past uprisings and its contributions to commerce, culture and intellectual life.
“Halabja is not only a site of tragedy but also a centre for strength, with rich agricultural resources and immense economic potential,” he noted.
Looking ahead, President Rashid stressed the importance of attracting investment and launching key development projects.
“We must redouble our efforts to bring investment, advance strategic projects and secure long-term progress for the city,” he remarked.
He also praised the role of Halabja University, highlighting its contribution to education and scientific advancement in Iraq.
The delegation presented a formal request for Halabja to be recognized as a governorate, urging Parliament to prioritise the draft law in upcoming sessions.
President Rashid also listened attentively to their concerns and pledged to support initiatives that enhance the city’s status and improve living conditions for its residents.
The delegation commended the President’s commitment to Halabja’s development and extended an invitation for him to visit the city firsthand, emphasising the importance of continued support for rebuilding efforts and economic revitalization.
