DEM Party Delegation Arrives in Sulaymaniyah to Discuss Peace Process

The Equality and Peoples' Democracy (DEM)  Party delegation arrived in Sulaymaniyah on Monday, 17 February 2025, and will meet Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). An advisor to the PUK President says that the delegation's visit is significant as PUK President plays an pivotal role in the Kurdish issue, as does the PUK in the region.

The DEM Party delegation, which consists of two lawmakers who have previously met twice with Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) since December last year, arrived in the Kurdistan Region's capital Erbil on Sunday, 16 February 2025. 

Bestun Fayaq, PUK President's advisor, told PUKMEDIA that the delegation's visit to the Kurdistan Region is an important opportunity to discuss the Kurdish issue in the region.

He added: "The PUK President plays an pivotal role in the Kurdish issue, as does the PUK in the region. The delegation will meet with two Kurdish political figures: PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani and Kurdistan Democratic Party President Masoud Barzani."

He further stated: "The delegation also conveys Abdullah Ocalan's message regarding the peace process and the Kurdish issue in the region, as well as ways to address the Kurdish issue in Türkiye. Hence, The visit is crucial to addressing the Kurdish and PKK issues in the region. "

Fayaq added that the visit is crucial, given the current situation in the region, particularly the situation in Syria and the initiatives being taken to resolve the Kurdish issue.

The visit comes amid efforts to establish a fresh peace process between the Turkish state and the PKK. The DEM Party is mediating talks between the two sides.
