The senior committee of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) have completed their draft proposal for formation of the next Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), while the PUK Spokesperson says that the demands should be in line with the changes in the region, noting that the PUK believes that peace is preferable to war regarding the Kurdish issue in Türkiye and Syria.

Demand Should Be In Line with the Changes

PUK Spokesperson Saadi Ahmed Pire stated during an interview with Kurdsat News that the PUK and KDP will soon resume their talks to discuss the process for establishing the new Kurdistan Region government (KRG).

He added: "The senior PUK-KDP Committee has finalised the draft proposal on the recognition of differences, positions, participation, and governance. The summit of both sides will settle any remaining issues."

"To achieve a positive outcome, the demands of both political parties must be in line with the developments that have occurred in the Middle East and the region," he said

After five meetings, the PUK-KDP joint committee prepared a draft proposal for the establishment of the new KRG.

Kurdistan parliamentary elections were held in October of last year, and the Kurdistan Region is currently awaiting the formation of its new cabinet.

It is anticipated that the two victorious parties, the PUK and the KDP, will come to an agreement to form the next government because a number of parties have already stated that they will function as opposition parties in the parliament.

Peace is Preferable to War
Regarding the Equality and Peoples' Democracy (DEM) Party delegation's visit to Sulaymaniyah, Pire said: "We want to hear from the Imrali delegation about the outcomes of their trip there. As the PUK, we believe that peace is preferable to war, as well as working to implement the legitimate demands of the Kurds in North Kurdistan (Kurdish parts of Türkiye). We also believe that since the war has been going on for decades without producing any results, it is time to try the peace process."

"We must strive for Kurdish unity in Syria and refrain from interfering in their affairs, as if the Kurds help themselves, the international community will help them as well," he added.

The DEM Party delegation is scheduled to visit Sulaymaniyah and meet PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani on Tuesday, 18 February 2025. The delegation consists of two lawmakers who have previously met twice with Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), since December last year. Ocalan is imprisoned at the Imrali Prison.

The visit comes amid efforts to establish a fresh peace process between the Turkish state and the PKK. The DEM Party is mediating talks between the two sides.
