The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc in the Iraqi parliament held a press conference following the parliament's approval of the amendment to the federal general budget. They announced that the demands of teachers and employees had been presented to the Presidency of the parliament and the Council of Ministers, reaffirming their full support for these demands.
Harem Kamal Agha, Leader of the PUK bloc, stated during the press conference: "The unity of the Kurdistan blocs and the efforts of everyone have led to the passing of the budget amendment, aiming to find a lasting solution to the salary issues of Kurdistan Region employees. We have successfully overcome this long-standing obstacle, and under the amendment, the export of the Kurdistan Region’s oil will resume through the SOMO Company."
He further explained, "We raised the demands of the teachers and employees on hunger strike in Sulaymaniyah with the Presidency of the parliament and the federal Council of Ministers, and we fully support their legitimate demands. We also called for the salaries for December of last year to be sent to the Region."
Harem Kamal Agha added that they had called for the establishment of a committee from both the Federal Council of Ministers and the Iraqi parliament to visit the hunger-striking teachers and employees, address their issues, and work towards a solution. He also urged an end to the strike, stressing that their lives are at risk and their message had already been delivered.
A group of teachers and employees have been on hunger strike for six days outside the UN office in Sulaymaniyah, protesting the ongoing delay in the payment of their salaries. Their protest highlights the financial struggles they have been facing due to the prolonged delay, with many of them calling for immediate action to address the issue and ensure timely payments in the future.
