Qubad Talabani, deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, recalled the February 1 tragedy, stating that February 1 will be remembered as a symbol of our common destiny and unity throughout history.

On February 1, 2004, two terrorists entered the city of Erbil and strategically attacked the headquarters of two major political parties. It was a heinous crime against the Kurds and the city of Erbil. Al-Qaeda terrorists carried out two suicide bombing attacks simultaneously at the headquarters of 3rd centre of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in Erbil and the 2nd branch of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). The two suicide bombings coincided with the first day of Eid al-Adha of that year. A total of 105 people, who gathered at the two buildings to celebrate the first day of Eid, were martyred.

Deputy PM Talabani said in his message:

On February 1, 2004, the blood of our martyrs united. The terrorists and suicide bombers did not distinguish between the blood of a civilian, the blood of a PUK cadre or leader, and the blood of a KDP cadre or leader.

February 1 will be remembered as a symbol of our common destiny and unity throughout history.
