Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, met today, Thursday, 30 January 2025, with the French Ambassador to Iraq, Patrick Durel, to discuss the latest political developments in the region, relations between Erbil and Baghdad, and several other matters.

The meeting, which was also attended by Yann Braem, the French Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, focused on recent political and security developments, particularly the situation in Syria. Both sides emphasised the importance of stability in Syria and the wider region, highlighting the necessity of cooperation and coordination between the international community and Syrian authorities to build a better future for the country—one that guarantees the rights of all communities, especially the Kurdish population, within the framework of an inclusive new governance system.

Regarding the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government cabinet, both parties agreed on the urgency for political factions in the Kurdistan Region to accelerate the government formation process. In this context, Qubad Talabani affirmed that intensified efforts are underway to ensure that the next cabinet is effective, cohesive, and strong, established on genuine partnership and committed to fulfilling the aspirations and demands of the people of Kurdistan.

On the subject of relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, both sides stressed the need for a fundamental resolution of outstanding issues through dialogue. The Deputy Prime Minister noted that a delegation from the Region is set to visit Baghdad in the near future and expressed hope that this visit would lead to a resolution and agreement with the federal government concerning the budget and the salaries of the Region’s civil servants.
