Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid received Hakan Fidan, the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, and his accompanying delegation at Baghdad Palace, where they pledged to tackle regional challenges and enhance cooperation between the two sides, the Iraqi Presidency reported on Sunday, 26 January 2025.

According to the Iraqi Presidency, the two side's discussions centred on deepening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation mechanisms across multiple sectors.

President Rashid reaffirmed Iraq’s firm position against any interference in its internal affairs and stressed the importance of respecting Iraq’s sovereignty, national security and independence. He emphasised the necessity of both nations ensuring that neither poses a threat to the security or stability of the other. The President also reiterated Iraq’s commitment to implementing the decisions of the Iraqi National Security Council.

The talks addressed pressing regional and international developments, with both sides underscoring the importance of reducing tensions, de-escalating conflicts and promoting dialogue to resolve disputes among nations. President Rashid emphasised Iraq’s desire to strengthen relations with Türkiye on the foundation of mutual respect and benefit. He also urged the swift implementation of memorandums of understanding signed during the Turkish President’s visit to Iraq last year, highlighting their potential to enhance the shared interests of both nations.

In discussions on counterterrorism, President Rashid called for sustained joint efforts to eliminate the threat posed by ISIS and other extremist groups. He emphasised the importance of regional and international cooperation in achieving long-term security and stability.

Regarding Syria, President Rashid expressed his hope for the establishment of a Syrian government that prioritises inclusivity and diversity, representing all segments of society. He stressed the need to protect the rights of all Syrians and foster peace and prosperity in the region.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan reiterated Türkiye’s unwavering support for Iraq’s stability, security and independence. He proposed forming a regional alliance involving Iraq, Syria, Jordan and Türkiye to combat ISIS, dismantle its strongholds, and disrupt its funding sources, ensuring greater stability for the region.

Minister Fidan highlighted the robust and enduring relations between Iraq and Türkiye, expressing Türkiye’s commitment to advancing economic, trade and investment ties. He also emphasised cooperation on critical issues such as water resources and environmental challenges, envisioning broader economic opportunities for mutual benefit.
