President Rashid and Swiss President meet in Davos.
On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, President of Iraq Abdullatif Jamal Rashid visited the Swiss Pavilion, where he met with the President of the Swiss Confederation, Karin Keller-Sutter.
Their discussions focused on exploring new avenues to strengthen bilateral relations between Iraq and Switzerland, with an emphasis on enhancing collaboration in economic development, education, and investment.
“Our partnership with Switzerland holds significant potential. Reviving the Iraqi-Swiss Joint Committee is crucial to unlocking new opportunities for cooperation,” said President Rashid. “Through a memorandum of understanding, we aim to establish a solid framework for sharing vital information to combat money laundering and terrorism financing.”
President Rashid expressed appreciation for Switzerland’s role in returning valuable Iraqi artifacts, highlighting the importance of continued efforts to recover Iraq’s frozen assets abroad.
“Reclaiming these essential resources is critical for Iraq’s future,” he noted.
The President also pointed out the potential for collaborative initiatives under Switzerland’s Blue Peace Initiative, a programme launched in 2010 to promote water sustainability and foster regional peace.
The conversation also addressed the ongoing work of the World Economic Forum to enhance international cooperation across various sectors, with a shared focus on global political and security issues. Both leaders stressed the importance of strengthening global efforts to ensure stability and peace.
Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter welcomed President Rashid’s participation at the Forum and reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to expanding its partnership with Iraq in ways that serve the mutual interests of both nations.
The meeting was attended by Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, Ali Al-Shukri, Chairman of the Board of Advisors and Experts at the Presidency of the Republic, and Iraq’s Chargé d’Affaires in Switzerland, Mohammed Al-Dabbagh.
