Bafel Jalal Talabani, PUK President.
Bafel Jalal Talabani, the President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) issued a statement to mark the return of farmers’ properties in the disputed areas, saying:
“We extend our gratitude to the Prime Minister and all the parliamentarians who supported this decision. Through this law, thousands of acres of land will be restored to their rightful Kurdish and Turkmen owners, who have been unjustly deprived of them for years.”
The message from President Bafel Jalal Talabani:
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Kurdish MPs in Baghdad for their unity and unanimous support for the draft law on returning agricultural lands to Kurdish and Turkmen farmers in the Iraqi parliament.
We also express our gratitude to the Presidency of the Iraqi parliament, as well as all MPs and factions, for their backing in ensuring the success of this significant effort to restore rights to those who have been denied them for decades.
This law will repeal numerous decisions of the Ba’ath regime, reversing over 50 years of Arabisation. It will see thousands of acres of land returned to the Kurdish and Turkmen communities in Kirkuk, Khurmatu, Khanaqin, Mandali, and the Nineveh Plain. Furthermore, it presents a critical opportunity for us, as Kurds, to unite in protecting the rights of our people and fellow citizens in all disputed areas in the future.
I take this moment to commend the PUK MPs in Baghdad for their unwavering sincerity and dedication, which enabled the creation of a national consensus to pass this historic decision.
Finally, I call on all parties to collaborate with a spirit of patriotism and Kurdish solidarity to end the injustices inflicted upon our people by the former regime. Our unity symbolises our strength, and together, we can take even greater strides forward.
