Today, Monday 20th January 2025, the World Economic Forum will commence in the Swiss town of Davos, with 3,000 prominent figures from over 130 countries taking part, including numerous heads of state and government, such as the President of Iraq, Dr. Abdullatif Jamal Rashid.
The Iraqi Presidency announced yesterday, Sunday, that Dr. Abdullatif Jamal Rashid will attend the World Economic Forum meetings in Davos. The President’s media office issued a brief statement confirming that Dr. Rashid will travel to Switzerland today to participate in the event.
The World Economic Forum in Davos brings together influential global leaders from the fields of economy, technology, politics, and society under the theme 'Collaboration for the Intelligent Age'. The event will run until 24th January, addressing pressing economic, technological, and environmental issues, and exploring potential solutions.
This year’s forum will be attended by around 3,000 distinguished individuals from more than 130 countries, including 350 government leaders, of which 60 are heads of state and government. The event will see a significant global presence, representing diverse sectors and regions, aimed at advancing dialogue, fostering trust, and promoting sustainable solutions to shared challenges.
Additionally, over 1,600 business leaders will participate, including more than 900 top CEOs and chairpersons of member companies and forum partners, as well as over 120 global innovators, technology pioneers, and emerging companies.
The forum will focus on five main themes: reimagining growth, industries for the smart age, investing in people, protecting the planet, and rebuilding trust.
The forum opens on the same day as Donald Trump’s swearing-in as U.S. President. Trump, who has pledged to end the war in Ukraine, will address the forum virtually on 23rd January. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also scheduled to speak on 21st January.
On the international stage, notable figures such as Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Jens Stoltenberg, former Secretary-General of NATO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, and Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, will be in attendance.
Forum President and CEO Børge Brende highlighted that issues such as the situation in Syria, the “devastating humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” and the potential escalation of conflict in the Middle East will be key topics of discussion.
