On Monday, January 13, 2025, the Iraqi Parliament voted to extend the tenure of the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) by two years.

Dr. Baryar Rashid, a member of Iraq's parliament from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc, told PUKMEDIA that the Iraqi Parliament voted to extend the IHEC's tenure by two years.

"The majority of parliament members voted to extend the IHEC's term for two years, until 6 January 2027," according to him.

The parliament's vote follows the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council's decision to prolong the IHEC's tenure by two years (from January 7, 2025 to January 6, 2027).

The decision comes as the parliament begins its fourth year, the Iraqi government is expected to hold parliamentary elections in late 2025.

The IHEC's term has been extended twice before. The first time was on 22 November 2023 to oversee the provincial council and the second time was on 22 May 2024 to oversee the Kurdistan parliamentary elections.
