PUK President, US CG Discuss Syria & Peshmerga Unification

Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), received Steven Bitner, US Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, on Saturday, 11 January 2025.
During the meeting, which was attended by Darbaz Kosrat Rasul, Head of the PUK Relations Bureau, they deliberated on the situation in the Middle East and Syria, the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government, and the unification of the Peshmerga forces.
They underlined the importance of ongoing dialogue and understanding among all political forces and parties in order to maintain stability and establish a service-oriented government.
Regarding the situation in Syria and the Kurds in Rojava, President Bafel stated: "We emphasise the importance of safeguarding the rights of all nations and communities, particularly the Kurds, and our efforts continue in this regard. We hope that everyone would act responsibly and that genuine partnership will be followed in managing the country."
The formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government was also discussed at the meeting, with President Bafel stating: "We have previously discussed the establishment of a fair and service-oriented government, and we now reiterate that the PUK wants a government that aims to protect people's rights, improve their lives, serve without discrimination, and work to empower our Region. A government that seeks to tackle problems from a new perspective and guide Kurdistan towards prosperity and stability."
Regarding the unification of the Peshmerga forces and the continued efforts to build a strong national force, President Bafel praised the assistance of the coalition forces, especially the United States, and said: "The Peshmerga forces must be reorganised with a national mindset and free from party interference. The PUK will assist in every manner to achieve this supreme goal."
