The Security Media Cell (SMC) of Iraq reported six dead bodies of Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists, including the alleged "Deputy Wali of Kirkuk", were found following an airstrike conducted by Iraqi F16 aircraft in the Hamrin Mountains, Kirkuk.

The SMC stated in a statement: "Subsequent to our announcement concerning the airstrike executed by Iraqi F16 aircraft in the Hamrin Mountains within the Kirkuk Operations Command area, which aimed at a significant hideout used by terrorists attempting to attack the operational forces... six corpses of ISIS terrorists were found, including the individual referred to as the (Deputy Wali of Kirkuk)."

The statement revealed that the terrorists were encircled in caves and intricate hideouts within the Hamrin Mountains for five days, asserting that "these preemptive operations, grounded in precise intelligence, yielded significant, high-level outcomes in eradicating the remaining defeated factions of the terrorist groups."

ISIS seized large swathes of Iraqi land in 2014, declaring a "caliphate" and killing thousands of people there before Baghdad declared victory in 2017. However, remnants of the terrorists are still active in the country, especially in the regions disputed between Erbil and Baghdad.

The terrorists ambush, kidnap, and extort both civilians and members of the security forces in the disputed areas, which stretch across several provinces, including Kirkuk, Nineveh, Diyala, and Saladin.

Security forces conduct frequent operations aimed at eliminating the remnants of the terrorists.

Last Saturday, 4 January 2025, the Operations Directorate of the Kurdistan Region Security Agency (Asayish) and the Iraqi National Security Service (INSS) reported the apprehension of four individuals wanted under Article 4 of Iraq's Anti-Terrorism Law.
