The Leader of the National Wisdom Movement, Sayyid Ammar al-Hakim, has called on the Iraqi parliament to vote on a law to establish Halabja as a new governorate.
Sayyid Ammar al-Hakim visited the city of Halabja today, Wednesday, and, during a press conference, expressed his condolences to the martyrs of Halabja and all the martyrs of Iraq. He also laid a wreath at the memorial to the martyrs in Halabja.
He stated: "The Halabja tragedy is an assault on humanity, and it remains a crime that must be recognised globally. We hold the people of Halabja, especially the new generation, responsible for keeping this memory alive, as much of the world still knows little about Halabja. This crime was subject to a media blackout at the time, and we must remember the pivotal role of the late Sayyid Abdul Aziz al-Hakim in bringing this and other crimes of the former regime to international attention. However, the crime of Halabja is still not acknowledged in a way that reflects its magnitude."
Sayyid al-Hakim added: "Halabja needs health centres, psychological rehabilitation facilities, and environmental support. We commend the city's urban development and call for it to be officially recognised as a governorate, which would increase its funding and provide greater investment opportunities. This would be the greatest honour for the families of the martyrs."
He continued: "Our visit to this city expresses our condolences to the martyrs and our solidarity with the people of Halabja. It is also a message of peace and coexistence among the people. Injustice and oppression were the hallmark of the former regime, and we call for keeping this crime alive in the collective memory of humanity, to ensure such atrocities are never repeated."
Sayyid al-Hakim also recalled leading a team at the time to document the martyrs of the Halabja massacre, collecting photographs and recording the details of the victims in hospitals in Tehran.
