The Iraqi Parliament is set to reconvene early next week, and a parliamentary member stated that the matter about the expiration of the term of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) should be addressed at the very start of the council sessions.

Mala Karim Shukur, a member of the Iraqi Parliament from the PUK bloc, informed PUKMEDIA that the first session of the fourth year of the Iraqi Parliament will resume on 9 January 2025, with the primary agenda item being the conclusion of the IHEC's tenure.

"The IHEC's term expired on 5 January 2025, following a six-month extension," Shukur stated, adding that the Iraqi Parliament must determine whether to prolong the commission's term or dissolve the commission.

The Iraqi Parliament was set to convene on 5 January 2025, coinciding with the conclusion of the IHEC's term. Due to an inadequate number of MPs in attendance, the session was put off till early next week, and the IHEC matter is slated to be included on the agenda upon the resumption of meetings.

The IHEC has twice extended its tenure to conduct the provincial council and Kurdistan parliamentary elections, first on 22 November 2023 for six months and subsequently on 22 May 2024 for a further six months.
