The Operations Directorate of the Kurdistan Region Security Agency (Asayish) and the Iraqi National Security Service (INSS) reported the apprehension of four individuals wanted under Article 4 of Iraq's Anti-Terrorism Law.

On Saturday, January 4, 2025, the INSS declared in a press release that a collaborative security operation with the General Directorate of Operations of the Asayish Agency in the Kurdistan Region led to the apprehension of four suspects wanted under Article 4 of the Anti-Terrorism Law.

The statement indicated that investigations uncovered that the terrorist operatives were utilising counterfeit identification documents to facilitate their movements and evade security surveillance. It was revealed that two of them were employed by the "Military Development and Industrialisation Authority," associated with the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist factions in what was called the "Anbar Wilaya," where they served as technicians specialising in the manufacture of Katyusha rockets employed to target security forces during liberation operations. Furthermore, the other suspects were identified as belonging to what was called the Nineveh and Tigris Wilaya, where they engaged in direct terrorist assaults against security personnel and innocent civilians.

The statement indicated that the apprehended terrorists were submitted to the appropriate judicial authorities to implement requisite actions for their lawful punishment.

ISIS seized large swathes of Iraqi land in 2014, declaring a "caliphate" and killing thousands of people there before Baghdad declared victory in 2017. However, remnants of the terrorists are still active in the country, especially in the regions disputed between Erbil and Baghdad.

The terrorists ambush, kidnap, and extort both civilians and members of the security forces in the disputed areas, which stretch across several provinces, including Kirkuk, Nineveh, Diyala, and Saladin.
