With the start of the new year, the responsibilities of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) will conclude. A member of the Iraqi parliament has stated that the parliament must address this issue when it resumes its work to prevent the commission from operating in a legal vacuum.

Karwan Yarwais, a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan bloc in the Iraqi parliament, told PUKMEDIA: “The Iraqi parliament will resume its sessions on 9 January 2025, with the Presidency determining the agenda for the session.”

He further noted, “Several draft laws are pending a vote, including the Halabja Governorate Law concerning the Kurdish community.”

Yarwais explained, “On 5 January 2024, the six-month extension granted by the Iraqi parliament for the IHEC’s work to oversee the Kurdistan Parliamentary elections will come to an end. Therefore, it is crucial for the parliament to address this matter when it reconvenes on 9 January 2025 to avoid a legal vacuum for IHEC.”

The Iraqi parliament is set to resume its work on 9 January 2025, following the New Year holiday.
