This statement came during a meeting today, Tuesday 17th December 2024, in Erbil, between Qubad Talabani and Major General Kevin Leahy, Commander of Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve. They discussed the latest political and security developments in the region, particularly the situation in Syria.
In this regard, Qubad Talabani noted, "Despite some positive signs emerging from Syria, the overall situation remains sensitive," expressing hope that the rights of all communities in the new Syria would be protected, with special emphasis on the rights of the Kurds.
Concerning the situation in Western Kurdistan, the Deputy Prime Minister said, "The Kurds must remain united in their ranks and positions at this stage, ensuring their rights and status are guaranteed in a unified and democratic Syria."
The meeting also covered the ongoing threat posed by terrorist groups, particularly ISIS, to security and stability in the region. Both sides agreed that ISIS remains a significant threat. In this context, Qubad Talabani thanked the global coalition forces for their continued operations against ISIS terrorists.
